Wordle Tips and Strategy

The first thing to understand about Wordle is that the answer list is 2,309 common English words. Uncommon words, proper nouns, and obscure terms will never be the answer. This means your goal is to eliminate common words as fast as possible.

Strong openers work because they cover the letters that appear most often across the 2,309 answers. CRANE hits C, R, A, N, and E — five of the most common letters. SLATE hits S, L, A, T, and E. Either of these will give you strong clues on the first guess.

After two guesses, you should have enough information to solve the puzzle. If not, use the helper to filter remaining options before guess 3.

Watch for double letters

About 9 percent of Wordle answers contain a doubled letter (like ALLEY, ABBEY, or EMCEE). Most players assume all 5 letters are unique. If you have narrowed the list to a handful of options and none fit, try adding a repeated letter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Enter what you know from your current puzzle. Click each tile in the 5-column grid to cycle its color. Grey means that letter is not in the answer. Yellow means that letter is in the answer but not in that position. Green means that letter is correct in that exact position. After entering all your clues, the tool filters the Wordle answer list of 2,309 words and shows only the words that match every constraint you have set. It eliminates any word containing a grey letter, any word missing a yellow letter, and any word with a yellow letter in the same position you marked it.
Green means the letter is correct and in the right position. That letter is locked into that spot. Yellow means the letter appears somewhere in the answer but not in the position you guessed. Grey means the letter does not appear anywhere in the answer. If a letter appears twice in your guess and one is green while the other is grey, that letter appears exactly once in the answer in only the green position.
After your first guess, analyze the results before choosing your second word. If you got yellow letters, your second word must place those letters in different positions. If you got grey letters, your second word must not contain any of them. Your goal in guesses 2 and 3 is to eliminate as many possible answers as possible, not to guess the answer itself. Using the Wordle Helper after your first guess will show you how many valid answers remain, which helps you choose the highest-eliminating second word.
The average Wordle player solves the puzzle in approximately 4 guesses. Players who use strong opening words like CRANE, SLATE, or RAISE solve in 3 to 4 guesses about 80 percent of the time. The puzzle allows 6 guesses total. About 1 percent of solvers fail on any given day, meaning roughly 1 in 100 players does not solve the puzzle within 6 attempts.
Wordle accepts a large valid word list as guesses but uses a much smaller curated answer list of 2,309 common words. You can guess an uncommon word like ZOEAE that appears in the valid guess list and Wordle will accept it, but it will never be the actual daily answer because it is not in the answer list. Our helper filters only the 2,309-word answer list, so it shows you words that could actually be the answer — not just valid guesses.
Yes. The Wordle Helper works the same for any puzzle, past or current. Just enter the tile colors from whatever game you are trying to solve. The tool filters the same 2,309-word answer list regardless of date. If you want to practice with old Wordle puzzles, use the helper to see what answers remained after each guess.
