The Best Word Game Tools for 2026

Word Game Tools is built for players who love a daily word puzzle. Sometimes you get stuck. Sometimes you want to learn. Either way, you need fast answers without the hassle.

Every tool runs in your browser. We use the ENABLE word list — 172,823 verified English words. No signup. No email. No waiting on a server.

More than 3 million word game players use tools like these every month. Our site covers every major NYT puzzle and every major word board game in one place.

How to Use Word Game Tools

  1. Type your available letters into the word finder above.
  2. Use the length filter to narrow results to 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, or 8+ letters.
  3. Click any result to see its dictionary definition.
  4. For Wordle, use the dedicated Wordle Helper to enter green, yellow, and grey clues.
  5. For Spelling Bee, use the Spelling Bee Helper and enter all 7 letters including the required center letter.
  6. For Scrabble, use the Scrabble Finder with your exact rack tiles and a ? for blank tiles.

Word Game Strategy Guide

The best Wordle openers cover the most common English letters. CRANE, SLATE, and RAISE each eliminate the most possibilities in your first guess. Start with one of those three and you will solve most puzzles within 4 guesses.

In Spelling Bee, the highest-value words are pangrams. A pangram uses all 7 letters at least once and earns bonus points. Look for compound roots first. The suffix -ING added to a 4-letter root is one of the most common pangram patterns in the NYT puzzle.

In Scrabble, the bonus squares matter more than the tiles. A word with a Q landing on a triple-letter square outscores a 7-letter bingo on a plain row. Always scan the board for bonus square opportunities before playing a long word.

In Connections, group by meaning — not by spelling or sound. NYT builds the puzzle to trick players who sort by obvious pattern. Look for the unusual theme first. The hardest group (purple) is usually hiding in plain sight.

About Our Word Database

We use two sources. The primary dictionary is the ENABLE word list — a public-domain set of 172,823 standard English words. This is the same base list used by most word games including Words With Friends.

For Wordle-specific tools, we include the Wordle answer list of 2,309 common English words. These are tagged separately so you can see which words have appeared as Wordle answers.

For Scrabble, we support three dictionaries: TWL (Tournament Word List, ~190,000 words), SOWPODS (~276,000 words used in international play), and WWF (Words With Friends, ~173,000 words). You can switch dictionaries from the Scrabble Finder page.

We update word data annually. The current dictionary was last updated in January 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

What word game tools does this site offer?

Word Game Tools offers 7 free helpers: a Wordle Helper, Word Unscrambler, Spelling Bee Helper, Connections Helper, Scrabble Word Finder, Anagram Solver, and 5-Letter Word browser. Every tool uses the ENABLE word list of 172,823 English words and runs instantly in your browser with no account or login required. The site also has 104 browse pages covering every word starting or ending with each letter of the alphabet.

Is using a word game helper cheating?

Whether a word helper counts as cheating depends on the rules you and your group have agreed to. In competitive Scrabble tournaments, outside tools are not allowed. In casual Wordle with friends, most players consider helpers acceptable for learning. For solo play, there are no official rules at all. Many players use helpers to discover new vocabulary and improve their game over time. The NYT does not have a mechanism to detect or prevent tool use in Wordle.

What is the best starting word for Wordle?

Based on letter frequency analysis of the Wordle answer list of 2,309 words, the top starting words are CRANE, SLATE, RAISE, AUDIO, and AROSE. Each of these covers at least 4 of the 8 most common letters in Wordle answers: E, A, R, O, T, I, S, and N. CRANE is the most popular choice among high-scoring players because it places R and N in strong center positions where they are most likely to show useful clues.

How does the Spelling Bee helper work?

Enter the 6 outer letters and the required gold center letter from today's NYT Spelling Bee. The tool scans the ENABLE word list and returns every word that is 4 or more letters long, includes the center letter, and uses only the 7 available letters. Letters can be repeated in any word. Pangrams — words that use all 7 letters at least once — are highlighted at the top of results. The tool returns all valid English words, but the NYT uses its own curated list so some words the tool finds may not be accepted by the puzzle.

Can I find Scrabble words with a blank tile?

Yes. Enter a question mark (?) in your tile rack to represent a blank tile. The Scrabble Finder treats the blank as worth 0 points and finds all valid words that could be formed using any letter in that position. Results are sorted by score with the highest-value play shown first. You can switch between the TWL, SOWPODS, and WWF dictionaries to match the game you are playing.

How many 5-letter words are in the English language?

The ENABLE word list contains 8,938 five-letter words. The NYT Wordle puzzle uses a curated subset of approximately 2,309 common 5-letter words as possible answers, while accepting a larger list of 5-letter words as valid guesses. Our 5-Letter Words browser lists all 8,938 ENABLE words with Wordle answer frequency indicators so you can see which words have appeared as Wordle answers.

What is the difference between TWL and SOWPODS?

TWL (Tournament Word List) is the official Scrabble dictionary used in North American tournaments and contains approximately 190,000 words. SOWPODS is the combined word list used in international Scrabble tournaments and contains approximately 276,000 words. Words With Friends uses its own WWF dictionary of about 173,000 words that differs from both. A word valid in SOWPODS may not be valid in TWL, so always choose the correct dictionary for your game in the Scrabble Finder settings.
